With their self-titled debut, the Swedish three-piece still pledges fealty to the House of Homme, Garcia, Reeder, and Bjork, but that’s more an issue of tonality. As was the case with the split CD, Asteroid is as thick as mud and as dense as fog (similar to the Truckfighter's Gravity X). Even quieter songs like “Water” seem to be enveloped in an atmospheric smoke. There’s plenty of killer tracks here. Both bassist Johannes Nilsson and guitarist/organist Robin Hirse sing, and their different styles (one’s in a lower register and the other brings to mind a less accented Klaus Meine) blend well together and give the music a stronger identity.

Asteroid has constructed an excellent slab of somewhat eccentric underground heaviness here, replete with melody, harmony, and enough chewy fuzz and heavy bass/drum interplay to make any fan of progressive desert goodness faint with delight. Enthusiasts of Mammoth Volume, Stonewall Noise, or labelmates Dexter Jones' Circus Orchestra, not to mention others in the Fuzz Kingdom like Truckfighters, Sergeant Sunshine, Firestone, or Blowback will deem Asteroid's new self-titled an essential purchase.
