Scream of the Iron Iconoclast is a feast for fans of the band and the sort of introduction that'll answer just about every question the uninformed could have. Stinking Lizaveta has taken to calling themselves “doom-jazz” and that's as fitting as tag as any. They capture the grim, pessimistic spirit of doom music and couple it with jazz's fluidity. The individual instruments flow from working as one to wrapping around each other.

The performances by band members Yanni and Alexi Papadopoulos, along with drummer Chesire Agusta, are huge and nothing if not spectacular, but the sound itself has none of the trappings of money and the time that it buys. You get nuthin’ here but what the good old-fashioned wood of guitar, bass, and drums will give ya! The recording and mixing side of things comes courtesy of Steve Albini. Known for his work with bands like Neurosis, High on Fire, Mogwai, and Mono, Albini is a logical choice as he’s been vocal about the freedom that artists need in the recording studio. In this case, it sounds like Albini simply flipped the record switch and got out of the way to let Stinking Lizaveta do their thing. Lumbering, doomy and at times even thoroughly bluesy, but also with plenty of thunderous, mid-tempo metal grooves , Stinking Lizaveta are simultaneously versatile, strikingly original, and yet one more success story when it comes to preserving the viability of instrumental music in the metal underground.
