Taking the better qualities of Pelican, Isis, and Buried at Sea, the Ohio-based Mouth of the Architect created a truly engrossing sound. Mouth of the Architect’s Time and Withering was one of those underappreciated gems from 2004. Mouth of the Architect’s sole contribution, the awesomely vast “Sleepwalk Powder,” is a continuation of the band’s sound. It's an example of organic songwriting, with the song slowly evolving over its 17 minutes. The music gets denser and denser, with keyboard effects adding a dreary melody (similar to Minsk, in fact).

Featuring ex-Rune and Harlots members, Kenoma offers a similar sound, although they run more noticeably closer to Pelican than Mouth of the Architect. Their two tracks are instrumentals that flirt with the progressive. While the two songs are also on the lengthy side, they don’t meander and, even better, maintain a consistent mood throughout.
